The trees are putting on their raiments of gold, scarlet and orange.  But changing leaves are not the only sources of fall color, as I realized today while gathering a harvest for a hearty vegetable soup; check out the tawny tones of these tomatoes, amaranth flowers and swiss chard stalks.  And don’t forget the gorgeous shades of ‘hardy mums’ that blossom this time of year.  Many people plant these in containers and treat them as annuals to be discarded after the blooms fad but these crysanthemums can also be planted in the ground and will come back reliably year after year.  The lovely native asters that also bloom this time of year come in Halloween-worthy shades of purples.
